Frequently Asked Questions About Postpartum Care at DeRAMA

  • What is the Korean approach to postpartum recovery?

Korean postpartum care, known as 산후조리 (sanhujori, pronounced san-hoo-jo-ree), is a structured recovery tradition that typically begins immediately after birth and continues for several weeks. It is built around deliberate rest, warmth, and the methodical restoration of the body, and it differs meaningfully from both Western and Chinese approaches to postnatal recovery.

Unlike Western postnatal care, which often encourages a relatively rapid return to daily activity, sanhujori is built on the belief that the weeks after birth are a critical window. Mothers are advised to keep the body warm at all times, as Korean tradition holds that cold exposure after birth can cause long-term joint and circulatory concerns. Diet is equally central: miyeokguk, a nutrient-rich seaweed soup, is consumed daily to replenish iron, support lactation, and assist uterine recovery.

While Chinese confinement (yuezi) emphasises warming foods and ritual restrictions, Korean sanhujori places greater weight on clinical structure and body-specific treatments alongside cultural practices. At DeRAMA, these principles are applied within a modern, medically informed framework as a premium postnatal recovery centre in Singapore, combining the warmth and intentionality of Korean tradition with evidence-based postpartum support.

  • How long is the recommended postpartum stay?

Most mothers choose a stay of between 14 and 28 days, with 21 days considered the most beneficial window for meaningful physical recovery. The first three weeks after birth represent a critical period of postpartum healing: a time when the body is most responsive to structured rest, therapeutic treatment, and nutritional support.

The programmes at our luxury confinement centre in Singapore are structured to work within this window, with each day of your stay building on the one before it. That said, every mother's needs are different, and our team will help you identify the duration that best supports your recovery goals during your introductory call.

  • What should I pack to bring with me during my stay?

You will be provided with a packing guide before your arrival, so you can arrive feeling calm, clear, and ready for recovery.

As a general guide, we recommend bringing your personal skincare products, toiletries, comfortable clothing or sleepwear, and personal undergarments. Many mothers also like to bring small comfort items such as sleep socks to make their stay more relaxing.

At DeRAMA, we provide all baby essentials, premium bath amenities, breastfeeding support equipment, and program-related products as part of your stay. Simply bring the items that make you feel comfortable and at home, and we will take care of the rest.

  • Can family members visit during the stay?

At DeRAMA, our programmes are designed with a strong focus on the mother's recovery and the health and safety of newborns. Fathers are welcome to stay together with the mother and baby throughout the confinement period.

To maintain a safe, hygienic, and restful environment, visitor access to Level 12 is not permitted during the stay. Visiting arrangements for other family members will be discussed during your introductory call and coordinated by your Client Manager throughout your stay, ensuring that meaningful family connection and your personal rest are thoughtfully balanced.

As newborns have developing immune systems, we also seek to minimise unnecessary exposure to external environments and visitors where appropriate.

The health, recovery, and comfort of both mother and baby remain our highest priorities, and we appreciate your understanding and support.
